What You Can Expect:
As would happen during an MRI, during a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) session, our trained specialists use a highly-focused, pulsed magnetic field to stimulate neurons in the parts of the brain that affect mood. TMS is most effective after we have used SPECT imaging to gain a better picture of your brain so that we know whether you will benefit from TMS and can develop a treatment program for your particular brain.

During TMS, we can stimulate or inhibit the brain at different frequencies to treat conditions such as depression. When small electrical currents are directed at the prefrontal cortex of the brain, you experience increased blood flow and glucose metabolism, which may elevate your mood. Unlike pharmaceutical treatments, TMS has virtually no side effects. It has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of a type of depression and may help with other mood disorders, such as anxiety and perhaps moods affecting marital conflict.

Having a TMS treatment feels like sitting in a dentist’s chair, but without the pain! You will sit in a comfortable chair, and because the TMS system emits a tapping noise, will be given ear plugs. As TMS begins, you will feel a tapping sensation on your scalp, which most patients do not find bothersome. The tapping is the magnetic pulsing, which will be repeated in 30-second intervals. Your initial session will last about an hour and a half so that the specialist can perform tests to identify your motor threshold and set the system to work correctly for your brain and body. After that, your sessions will last about 40 minutes. You do not need to take any special dietary precautions or make changes to your routine before or after a TMS session.

Please note that transcranial magnetic stimulation is currently only available at our Newport Beach location. To learn if TMS may be an alternative treatment option for you, call 1-888-564-2700 or click the link here schedule an appointment.
