It turned out that it is the sounds of nature that relax a person through the impact on the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for the stress response “hit, run or freeze”. The staff of the Medical School of Brighton and Sussex conducted an experiment with the participation of volunteers who were asked to listen to the sounds of nature or an artificial environment. During the observation, an MRI scan of the participants ‘ brains was performed. The heart rate was also monitored.
According to the results obtained, the activity of the brain regions that turn on in a relaxed state was different depending on the audio accompaniment. If the volunteer was listening to the sounds of nature, the focus of his attention was directed outward. If artificial sounds were turned on to him, his attention was switched inside. A similar mechanism works in depressive disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, the sounds of nature triggered the relaxation mode of the autonomic nervous system.
