Many of us have been through or experienced a traumatic event in our lives that has affected us emotionally.

Even if the traumatic event or experience didn’t happen directly to you, hearing it, seeing it or witnessing it can sometimes be enough to have a major impact on you and your life.

For some of us as time passes the fear and anxiety from the event will fade away and eventually disappear all together but if the fear, anxiety, insomnia or flashbacks don’t disappear with time you might have post traumatic stress disorder also know as PTSD for short.

PTSD can make people feel ‘on edge’ all of the time or feel very nervous, they may even feel easily startled, have a difficult time concentrating, feel irritable and have trouble sleeping.

PTSD can make people feel like things around them aren’t real, feel like they are disconnected from their thoughts or body or even have a hard time feeling emotions.

Unfortunately there are some jobs that put people in very dangerous and difficult situations to deal with such as serving in the military, police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, doctors and nurses, people in these jobs experience much higher rates of PTSD than other jobs.

Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms may start within one month of a traumatic event, but sometimes symptoms may not appear until years after the event.
