Alternate Nostril Breathing Tutorial: Nadi Shodhana Pranayama for Trauma Recovery

Greetings and thank you for joining me for this video!
.
In working with thousands of people who struggle with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder over the past 13 years, I have found that Alternate Nostril Breathing, or Nadi Shodhana Pranayama, is profoundly beneficial.
.
.
I have been met with expressions of extreme relief again and again, when people who have challenges quieting their minds report that alternate nostril breathing allows them to finally experience the peace they have been seeking. One reason my clients often owe to the ease of quieting that nadi shodhana brings, is that the practice involves concentration in moving your fingers to alternating nostrils in harmony with the breath. Its as though it takes so much focus to practice this breath correctly, that its hard to be thinking about anything else, and then……peace, calm, and a quiet mind are present.
.
.
And don’t worry, this pranayama is appropriate for all experience levels. I do however encourage you to check out Ujjayi Pranayama first (I’ve shared the links below) if you are brand new to pranayama.

.
Alternate Nostril Breathing is a wonderful practice for bringing balance to the the nadis, the energy channels within the body. Another reason why it’s calming is that we are using bilateral stimulation within this pranayama, alternatively engaging left and right hemispheres of the frontal lobe. This allows for increased neural processing, which is extremely important in trauma resolution. Bilateral stimulation also creates a soothing effect for the limbic system.
.
.
There are so many benefits to this practice- I hope you’ll find out for yourself!
.
.
Please share: how has alternate nostril breathing informed your yoga and mindfulness practices? I’d love to hear your favorite hand mudra to use with this pranayama as well.
