Children and Trauma
There are many types of Trauma –
Physical Sexual and Emotional: Abuse
Physical Abuse includes : hitting, pushing , punching ,burning , kicking, slapping .
Sexual Abuse includes NHS definition “A sexual assault is any sexual act that a person did not consent to, or is forced into against their will. It is a form of sexual violence and includes rape (an assault involving penetration of the vagina, anus or mouth), or other sexual offences, such as groping, forced kissing, child sexual abuse or the torture of a person in a sexual manner.”
Natural disasters includes – earthquake , hurricane ,flooding.
Grief – Death of family member or Close Friend.
Neglect -Child’s emotional or physical needs aren’t being met. e.g.: Child isn’t being fed. Parents don’t give attention to the child.
Accidents and Illnesses –
Witnessing violence or abuse in family or home.
Signs that a child is experiencing Trauma :
*They start re-enacting the traumatic experience in play, or act-out the abuse.
*Sudden mood changes.
*Sudden Loss /Over Appetite
*Have new Fears
*Withdrawal and isolate
*Problems with Sleep
*Changes in Behaviour
