Individuals that have been in a relationship with a narcissist develop symptoms similar to PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). PTSD is a condition similar to experiences of veterans that are no longer in combat. The veteran experiencing PTSD symptoms has flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, depression, jumpy, difficulty focusing or concentrating or intrusive memories and images. They may attempt to control these symptoms by drinking alcohol, taking drugs or avoiding reminders. When a person is exposed to experiences that overwhelm their mind and emotions over a period of time, unlike regular PTSD, they person develops Complex PTSD. This is a more severe form of PTSD and takes longer to heal. However, healing is possible.
