Do you have nightmares? This is something that happens to a fair number of us. If you have a history of trauma or PTSD, nightmares can happen more frequently. In fact, this is often a defining characteristic of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. So where do nightmares come from? Nightmares come from a part of the brain called the Amygdala. The picture you see here is a side view of the brain. So as you can see, the amygdala is just anterior to the brain stem. You have one on either side, and this is where your fear is stored. These are parts of the brain which are effected by trauma. This is your “fight or flight” response. So how do we mitigate that? How do we stop the nightmares? We mitigate this by engaging the anterior section of the brain, right behind the forehead, what’s called the prefrontal cortex. Now the prefrontal cortex is the logic and reasoning part of your brain. There are a number of ways we can engage that; I have meditations that are specific to that; they are helpful in engaging that part of the brain.
