Marine with PTSD identified as gunman who went into student bar and killed 12

The gunman who killed 12 people at a bar holding a student nigh has been named as former Marine and PTSD-sufferer Ian David Long.

Long, 28, drove his mom’s car to Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California at 11:20pm local time Thursday, where he shot a doorman and cashier before opening fire inside the bar room.

Police raided the heavily-tattooed killer’s home Thursday morning, with neighbors describing him as a veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said initial investigations appeared to back eyewitness claims that Long shot himself dead.

Long was honorable discharged from the Marines, and is said to have ‘terrified’ his mother Colleen after returning home from a tour of Afghanistan.

Neighbor Richard Berge, 77, living nearby told MailOnline: ‘She lived in fear in case something happened.

‘He wouldn’t get help. She was beside herself and didn’t know what to do.

‘She’s a wonderful woman but she was just going through hell with her son. Now she’s got to live with this.’

He spoke after Sheriff Dean said his department had dealt with Long on previous occasions, including a call-out to his home in April when deputies discovered him acting irate and irrationally.

A mental health crisis team was summoned to help Long on that day, and he was not taken into custody.

Mr Dean said the other prior encounters were a traffic accident and an incident when he was the victim of a beating at a bar.

Long was found dead in the Borderline Bar and Grill after 12 people were shot to death late on Wednesday.

Long who wore a black trenchcoat, glasses and beard, is then said to have thrown smoke bombs into the main bar area, before shooting with his legally-purchased Glock .45 caliber handgun without saying a word.

He did not carry any form of ID to the scene of the massacre, but law enforcement officials announced they had discovered his identity shortly after 8am EST.

His first victim was named as Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy Ron Helus, 54, a 29 year law enforcement veteran who was just a year off retirement.

Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer were first on the scene.

The father-of-one called his wife shortly before entering the bar where was killed.

Eyewitness Holden Harrah told Today how the gunman came in, apparently in disguise, and began shooting without saying anything. His first victim was named as a 20 year-old cashier called Christina. Her condition is unknown.

He explained: ‘I was looking directly at the front entrance. I saw the suspect come in, pull out his gun, and start shooting immediately.

‘He didn’t even say anything. he walked in. He didn’t say one word. He pulled out a gun and started shooting.

‘The first two gunshots were towards the front desk.

‘The girl that was working the front desk was the first couple of shots that happened.’

Holden said that he believed the shooter was wearing a ‘disguise’, described him as being in a beard and glasses, and said he believed that the shooter turned the gun on himself.

‘He had a disguise…a black outfit, glasses, black shirt, jacket, (he was) over 30.’

Harrah fled to his car, and later took a female friend with a broken arm to hospital for treatment.

KTLA was also contacted by a man trying to find his student niece, who was in Borderline. He said her Apple watch is still ‘pinging’ its location from inside the bar.

A medical examiner was at the scene around 7:30am EST Thursday, and was working to identify those killed so their families could be informed.

Donald Trump has also commented on the tragedy, tweeting: ‘I have been fully briefed on the terrible shooting in California.

‘Law Enforcement and First Responders, together with the FBI, are on scene.

’13 people, at this time, have been reported dead. Likewise, the shooter is dead, along with the first police officer to enter the bar.’

He added: ‘Great bravery shown by police. California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times.

‘That Sheriff’s Sergeant died in the hospital. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. Thank you to Law Enforcement.’

Horrifying video footage obtained by KCLA captures the sound of a woman screaming as shots ring out inside Borderline, while terrified drinkers fled the scene.

A witness to the bloodbath told ABC7: ‘I was at the front door talking to my stepdad. I heard these big pops. ‘There were three or four and I hit the ground.
