Sexual dysfunction and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how they can be related

Sexual dysfunction is an issue that is heavily wrapped in stigma and misinformation. Part of the issue is that many people do not want to talk it and worse yet, many clinicians are uncomfortable asking about. Dr. Harry McCleary starts the conversation about male Veteran sexual dysfunction and discusses the possible relationships between sexual dysfunction and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In this video I talk about male Veteran sexual dysfunction and how it can be influenced by PTSD. Multiple studies suggest that male Veterans with PTSD are more likely to develop sexual dysfunction than male Veterans without PTSD. Many more studies have attempted to find out why this occurs. Some of those reasons are difficulty with anger and irritation leading to difficulty with intimacy, relationship difficulties related to multiple PTSD symptoms and dysregulated neurotransmitter and stress hormone activity.

Sexual dysfunction looks differently from person to person, but often people are most familiar with the following 3 symptom categories.

– Decrease in libido

– Erectile dysfunction
– Ejaculatory problems

There are many causes and factors that can contribute to sexual dysfunction. If you are experiencing sexual dysfunction PLEASE CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN and remember that you are not alone.
