Mental trauma needs to be addressed or it will stay with you for your entire life. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Compassion Fatigue are two types of trauma that are prevalent in many occupations, particularly for First Responders: doctors, nurses, police, firefighters, dentists, social workers, veterinarians.

Why is the suicide rate so high for people in these professions? Because they are faced with trauma every day and repeatedly experience trauma from the people they care for. Experiencing repeated trauma leads to Compassion Fatigue and /or PTSD.

The first step is to recognize that the trauma has changed your way of being. Then, assess the level of trauma you are experiencing. The trauma is not the emotional pain, it’s the memory of what you felt during the experience. So identify the root cause of the trauma is paramount to beginning to let it go.
