What is CPTSD and How Does it Affect You?

Welcome! Do you know what CPTSD is and how it affects you? CPTSD is also known as Complex or Childhood post-traumatic stress disorder. I’ll explain it all in this Video! Please remember to like this video and subscribe to my channel if you enjoy this content!

CPTSD, is a condition that affects some people who have lived through extended periods of trauma, for example someone who’s lived through months or years of abuse. It causes symptoms very similar to PTSD but also creates other symptoms that can lead to complications in relationships and quality of life. Diagnosing CPTSD can sometimes be difficult, but it is important to identify and treat people with this condition to help them heal, and understand what CPTSD is and how it’s affected them. We are beginning to understand trauma comes in many forms. CPTSD causes additional symptoms as compared to PTSD and may require slightly different or longer-lasting treatment.

Some Examples of long-term trauma that may potentially cause C-PTSD include:

– Growing up with a narcissistic parent
– Growing up with an alcoholic parent
– Growing up with a mentally ill parent
– Physical and or emotional abuse
– Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of marginalization
– Sexual abuse and or human trafficking
– War, including prisoner-of-war camps
– Ethnic cleansing, which may include forced migration and concentration camps

Complex PTSD affects people in the following 7 areas

– Emotional regulation: trouble labeling and expressing your feelings
– Behavioral control and impulse control for example trouble following rules or making decisions; anger problems; eating disorders; and or abusing drugs and alcohol
– Attachment: trouble developing healthy boundaries; isolating yourself; not trusting other people
– Biology: chronic pain and other medical problems; lack of coordination
– Dissociation: memory loss; feeling detached from your own mind or body; trouble knowing what is and isn’t real
– Thinking: the person could have trouble concentrating, learning, or completing tasks
– Self-concept: which would be a feeling like you don’t know who you are; low self-esteem or body-image; guilt and toxic shame
