What Is Dissociation?

In this video I am going to explain what Dissociation is.
Dissociation is one way that our minds cope when we are overwhelmed by stress. It is usually in response to a trauma in childhood in which we have felt powerless. It can last minutes, hours or days. Dissociative episodes that last longer than this are usually a sign of a Dissociative Disorder of which there are three types: Dissociative Disorder of Movement and Sensation, Dissociative Amnesia, Dissociative Identity Disorder. I will explain more about each of these in the video.

** MORE ABOUT ME **
I am the Lead Clinical Psychologist at The British CBT & Counselling Service and find that I am often the first person with whom my patients share significant and intimate thoughts and memories. I feel at ease being a therapist, I feel I can empathise with people’s distress and discomfort but don’t feel overwhelmed by it, I can understand their problem and know how to help, it has always just felt like what I should be doing.
